NSW State Championships - Progress Report

The first four heats of the NSW State Championships for 2012-13 were run at Wangi over the weekend providing the opportunity for sailors and race committee to practice for the upcoming National Championships in December.

The weather conditions were ideal on Saturday with a northerly gradient transitioning during the afternoon to a north-easterly sea breeze - with a consistent 10-12kn for the first race and then 15kn for the second. Sandra O'Donnell, PRO, utilised GPS to set a perfect course with exact reaching angles and a 50-55 minute course length.

Racing was close from the outset with the lead changing constantly. Any errors or missing a shift invariably lead to loss of places. Tim Davies won the first heat and Peter Horne the second in a rising sea breeze.

It was great to see the return to OK racing of Dave O'Donnell and Mick McQueen. Both showed early form in heat 1 with a 4th and 7th respectively. Unfortunately Mick's borrowed boat fell apart an resulted in further DNF/DNC but great to see Mick back to the fold.

Sunday was hot and only light breezes which built to a pleasant 10-15kn for the third heat and after another race with very tight racing amongst the first five or six boats was won by Eddie. The wind dropped at the start of the final heat of the weekend due to a distant thunderstorm and left a patchwork of wind across the course. Stumpy and Dave found an early lead up the left but the right was eventually favoured by the returning sea breeze with the fleet again compressing on the first reach. Perfect 10-12kn conditions prevailed for the remainder of the race with Mark Skelton taking the win - four different winners for each of the first four heats and the top-four (after an expected drop) within two points.
